Moving Tips

By Donna Koring, Relocation Director

Planning and Organization

Make a list of what you need to do and when you need to do it. The best approach is to make a calendar of events for your moving timetable.

Unplanned events can happen during your move so be prepared. For example, whether you are buying or selling a house or renting an apartment, coordination of vacancy and occupancy dates can be a challenge, so be prepared with a contingency plan for temporary storage of your goods.

Become Involved

When you talk about moving, you really mean relocating. It's a process that usually takes anywhere from 90 to 120 days. If you and your family become involved in the process, you will find it can be a well-organized, efficient experience. The key is your effort to control each aspect of the relocation.

You cannot be passive. Moving is not something you can stand back and watch. It involves everyone! The responsibilities of relocating need to be shared...amongst you, your spouse, children, friends, employer, Realtor, and, last but not least, the moving company you select.

Couldn't agree more! If you don't take active part of the moving proccess - you are gonna have a bad time. Even if you hire the best movers in the world - the planing and organization is still a huge task, which could take all the time you have.

We are going to be moving in a couple of days. This is the first time my wife and I are moving. So this is a whole new experience for us. So I am researching for tips and things we can do in order to make it a good experience. I am also thinking about hiring a moving company. My question is would it be worth it to hire a moving company or do it alone?

Thanks for sharing these tips! How much does it generally cost to hire a moving company? If it is reasonably priced I'll definitely consider using one for my next move. It was really difficult to get all of the furniture out last time it literally took us all day. I'd love to have a little help next time! Thanks for sharing your tips and experience.

Thanks for the tips and information about moving. I am really excited to be moving soon, but I have never done it by myself and so I don't quite know what I am doing. I will definitely have to mentally take note of these tips and hopefully they will help me move smoothly. I can't wait for all the new adventures that are in store for my family and I.

'Always be prepared' is my motto for moving. I don't want to let anything mess up the timing, so I usually have about five backup plans. It's usually not necessary, but it certainly makes me feel better about the move. Otherwise it's easy to get overwhelmed.

Sure important to be organized when planning a move. It is so easy to get lost or side tracked when lots of things are going on at the same time. I'll be sure to be as organized as ever when planning my move next month. Thank you for the great advice.

Very important to be organized when moving lots of furniture. Everyone needs to know where they are going, and what they are doing. The tiniest mix up can have furniture in the wrong place, and people getting hurt. That is why when I need to move furniture I have a 'all hands on deck' meeting with everyone there to help to be sure we are all on the same page. Thanks for the great article.

My husband and I found a house we really liked so we put in an offer. We will be moving into our new home in about two months. I'll follow your advice and make a detailed list so that I can be organized. Hopefully this will go smoothly!
